Diversity, equity and inclusion

In our ever-changing world, society is expecting more of us as an organization, emphasizing greater accountability and transparency in order to promote DEI. We have a responsibility to foster meaningful change within our workforce and across our communities. At Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine, our commitment to diversity and inclusion drives us forward in our mission to promote innovation, performance and health equity.
Johnson & Johnson is committed to a global, evidenced-based DEI strategy as a business imperative and an important part of its success. Johnson & Johnson puts this commitment into action via multiple internal and external efforts—this includes the launch of Our Race to Health Equity (ORTHE) initiative, in which we are turning a moment into a movement to rebuild healthcare from a diverse perspective by supporting solutions that systemically address racial health equity.
Our Race to Health Equity
ORTHE was launched with the bold ambition that, together, we can create a world where the color of your skin is not a determinant of your access to care, quality of care or health outcomes. Our ORTHE initiative focuses on closing the racial health gap to create a unifying approach that highlights how we are operating as an ethical business, a social driver of health equity solutions and a leader in changing the culture of healthcare. Below are three ways in which Johnson & Johnson is working to accomplish this.

Investing in and supporting care models and solutions that drive healthier outcomes
We have engaged in community and social impact initiatives and leveraged our long-standing partnerships, dedicated employees and company resources to build solutions and spark life-changing innovations that support closing the racial health gap.

Creating enduring alliances and encouraging everyone to join the Race to Health Equity
No one entity can solve this problem alone. We are leading by example, using our talent for good, sharing best practices and lessons learned and co-creating solutions with our powerful partnership network to address racial and social health determinants.

Global culture of inclusion
At Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine, we imbue DEI across all business strategies—from marketing initiatives to supplier selection—to help us better understand the needs of consumers, customers and patients, and develop products that are reflective of their cultures and regions. Together with other companies, policymakers, academic organizations and advocacy partners, we’re working to achieve healthcare equity among underrepresented communities.

We recognize the importance of embracing a diverse and inclusive culture and are dedicated to building teams with an array of different perspectives, backgrounds and experiences. Our goal is to unite these diverse perspectives into one unified community where all individuals feel valued and work together to achieve greater outcomes.
Investing in future leaders
Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine is deeply committed to nurturing future generations of diverse STEM talent, from undergraduate to postdoctoral and beyond. Below are some important partnerships that demonstrate our ongoing commitment to DEI:
The Scholars of Oncology Diversity Engagement Program (SODEP) pairs 15 exceptional, ethnically diverse graduate and postdoctoral scientists with mentors for a one-year program that includes learning stipends, which can be applied towards research supplies, training courses or even travel expenses.
The Diversity in Drug Discovery and Development (4D) Fellowship Program is a joint effort with Drexel University’s Pharmacology and Physiology Department to develop a two-year fellowship focused on promoting DEI in the field of scientific research and drug discovery.
National Medical Fellowships, Inc. (NMF) is the premier national organization solely dedicated to providing scholarships and support to medical and health professions students across all groups intentionally marginalized in health care. In line with our shared goal of achieving health equity, we are expanding our work with NMF on two essential programs: The Alliance for Inclusion in Medicine (AIM) Scholarship Program & The Diversity in Clinical Trials (DCTR) Program
Scientist Mentoring & Diversity Program (SMDP) is a one-year mentoring program, which Johnson & Johnson has sponsored for over a decade, that pairs ethnically diverse students interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) with mentors from the medical technology, biotechnology and consumer healthcare industries.
The Janssen Oncology Internship Program is part of the DEI Council’s ongoing efforts to support the development of a diverse group of talented young scientists through its summer internship program. Summer internship positions will be offered in Clinical, Discovery, Translational Research and other functional areas as part of our Therapeutic Area (TA) collaboration.
We’re working to improve diverse and inclusive representation in clinical trials to make sure data and insights from underrepresented populations are available that can help inform the development of safe and effective products. Here are some of the ways in which we’re furthering this mission:
