On April 7, 2017, we are proud to stand with the World Health Organization in recognizing World Health Day and specifically, their campaign to ensure that more people with depression both seek and have access to the help they need.

At Janssen, we believe that stigma is often the first—and sometimes an insurmountable—barrier that prevents many people from getting help. Furthermore, for too many, lack of first-hand knowledge about depression and mental illness coupled with inadequate support in coping with it is overwhelming.

On World Health Day 2017, we reflect on the need to push back against the stigma that unfairly surrounds a diagnosis of depression by showing our support, talking openly, and showing those suffering that they are not alone.

Husseini Manji, M.D., F.R.C.P.C. is Global Therapeutic Head, Neuroscience. The major focus of Husseini’s research has been the investigation of disease- and treatment-induced changes in gene and protein networks that regulate synaptic and neural plasticity in neuropsychiatric disorders. His work has helped to conceptualize these illnesses as genetically influenced disorders of synaptic and neural plasticity, and has led to the investigation of novel therapeutics for refractory patients.
