Overwhelmed. It’s a feeling many experience as they or their loved ones are faced with a cancer diagnosis, and one that follows them in the ensuing search for relevant information and useful tools in their cancer journey. It was this feeling that helped inspire the creation of Cancer.com, a new digital destination that helps people impacted by cancer become more engaged in their care.
Cancer.com was created by Janssen Oncology in close collaboration with leading patient advocacy organizations: the American Cancer Society, CancerCare®, and Cancer Support Community.
“People diagnosed with cancer have tremendous anxiety as well as information needs. It’s hard for them to absorb and remember what their clinicians communicate in the course of brief appointments. Having a user-friendly, personalized online resource they can access at their convenience, to help answer their questions and calm their fears, is immensely valuable,” said Patricia J. Goldsmith, Chief Executive Officer, CancerCare®.
With the launch of Cancer.com, Janssen Oncology seeks to connect people with the most relevant information and tools they need throughout their cancer experience. By creating a unique profile, visitors can adjust content preferences based on type of cancer, where they are in their journey, as well as topics of interest.
By working closely with the community, Cancer.com is able to constantly evolve. It not only houses articles and other content from reliable sources, but also acts as a gateway to collaborator resources.
“As a trusted resource for cancer information, the American Cancer Society is pleased to contribute its expertise and content to ensure people affected by cancer receive the most up-to-date information to make informed decisions about their health,” said Chuck Westbrook, Senior Vice President of Cancer Control Programs and Services at the American Cancer Society. “The American Cancer Society is committed to attacking cancer from every angle. With the support of our partners, we can empower people with the information they need to navigate their cancer experience.”
Cancer types currently featured on Cancer.com include breast cancer, lung cancer, multiple myeloma, prostate cancer, and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The site also provides a wide range of relevant insights across all tumor types, with topic areas pinpointing what people impacted by cancer search for the most, such as insurance and financial support, tips for effectively engaging with a healthcare team, and how to find local support ranging from clinical trial information to travel services.
“Curated, personalized information is very important for people living with cancer because every person’s journey through cancer is different, which makes personalized information an essential part of the patient’s care plan. We at Cancer Support Community want to help individuals find the combination of educational and emotional support resources that will give them a sense of control,” said Hildy Dillon, Master of Public Health, Vice President, Education and Support Programs, Cancer Support Community.
In addition to customized content, Cancer.com also offers a suite of support tools to help visitors build skills to navigate life with cancer. One such tool is My Care Activator™, an exclusive digital health coaching tool developed by Johnson & Johnson behavior scientists that aims to pave a path toward better health outcomes. My Care Activator™ is customizable to visitors’ specific needs and prioritizes behaviors that can be changed to help them build or strengthen important skills, such as coping with symptoms, working with a care team, asking for support, and getting appropriate exercise and better sleep.
Cancer.com also features the Advocacy Connector, a tool that helps people find additional support by offering a comprehensive listing of resources based on visitors’ cancer type, location, and specific needs. Through the Advocacy Connector, people can search for local support ranging from clinical trial information to travel services and wellness activities.
We at Janssen Oncology are committed to working towards victories over cancer, and hope that Cancer.com helps to improve the lives of patients and their caregivers. Watch the video below to learn more and visit Cancer.com today.
