      Our heritage

Built on a legacy of care and innovation, we aim to make more progress advancing health for humanity in the next decade than we have in the last century. As part of Johnson & Johnson, we work to understand and address the serious health problems of today and unlock the potential medicines of tomorrow.

The Janssen name came from Dr. Paul Janssen, who founded Janssen Pharmaceutica N.V. in 1953.

      Our foundations

In 2010, the pharmaceutical companies of Johnson & Johnson adopted a common identity—the Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson. Coming together as “One Team” strengthened our connection as a global organisation. The name embodied our commitment to finding solutions for patients by advancing science and medicine.

Dr. Paul, as he was known throughout the global scientific community, was an exceptionally gifted and passionate scientist who revolutionised modern medicine and inspired a new generation of researchers. His life was dedicated to creating medicines that met the unmet needs of millions of patients. Janssen Pharmaceutica N.V. was acquired by Johnson & Johnson in 1961. That, and earlier acquisitions of McNeil Pharmaceutical and Cilag Chemie in 1959, became the foundation of our pharmaceutical business today.

      New identity, same purpose

In September 2023, The Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson became Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine. Our new brand truly reflects the best of who we are and what we do.

Patients inform and inspire our science-based innovations, which continue to change and save lives. Applying rigorous science and compassion, we confidently address some of the most complex diseases of our time and unlock the potential medicines of tomorrow.

Our diverse portfolio spans multiple therapeutic areas — Oncology, Haematology, Immunology, Neuroscience, Pulmonary Hypertension and Specialty Ophthalmology.

We are continuously working to develop treatments, aspiring to find cures, pioneering the path from lab to life, and championing patients every step of the way.

In 1924, Johnson & Johnson first established operations in the UK. Over the past century, generations of our employees have worked tirelessly to develop innovative treatments and technologies for patients in need. From a team of just 100 employees in our first office in Slough, Berkshire, to seven sites across the UK with a workforce of more than 3000; we are proud of our long heritage as a key site of innovation and growth for Johnson & Johnson.
