      Our responsibility to the planet

At Johnson & Johnson, we believe that a healthy planet and a healthy community go hand in hand. For over two decades, we have been working tirelessly to reduce our impact on the environment, understanding the intrinsic link between the health of our planet and the health of people.

As part of the world’s largest healthcare company, we recognise our responsibility—beyond industry regulations—to sustain natural resources and care for the planet. This commitment is reflected in Our Credo, which guides our decision-making and drives our focus on renewable and clean energy.
      Leading the way in Ireland
In Ireland, we are at the forefront of sustainability efforts. Across our operations, we are continuously pushing to reduce our environmental impact and adopt high-impact sustainable practices.
      100% renewable electricity
All ten of Johnson & Johnson’s Irish sites are powered entirely by renewable electricity, thanks to a direct power purchase agreement.[1]
      Investment in sustainability
Between 2020 and 2023, we invested €12.1 million into sustainability projects, completing 31+ energy initiatives to improve efficiency and reduce emissions.[1]
      Emissions reduction
In 2022, Johnson & Johnson Ireland’s sustainability projects led to a reduction of 3,544 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions.[1]

      Harnessing wind power in Cork
In Cork, our two manufacturing sites are powered by wind turbines, which we constructed as part of our collaboration with the Cork Lower Harbour Energy Group. These turbines provide clean, renewable energy to power our operations, ensuring that our sites are both environmentally and energy-efficient.
      Sustainability at Ringaskiddy
Our Ringaskiddy site is a shining example of sustainability in action, demonstrating our commitment to creating a healthier planet:
      • Zero Waste to Landfill: Since 2016, our Ringaskiddy plant has been a zero waste-to-landfill site, ensuring that all waste is either recycled, reused, or disposed of sustainably.
      • Water Efficiency: The site operates closed-loop water systems and has implemented rainwater harvesting, with water collected from roofs used for cooling towers and non-potable uses.
      • Protecting Biodiversity: In 2020, we established an apiary to support local bee populations and have built bug hotels on-site to protect and encourage biodiversity. Additionally, 741 indigenous trees have been planted on the site, further supporting the local ecosystem.
      • Allotments: In 2022, allotments were created, promoting sustainability and well-being by encouraging employees to grow their own vegetables.
      Our global climate goals
Our sustainability efforts in Ireland are part of Johnson & Johnson’s larger climate strategy, designed to address the urgent threat of climate change. We are committed to accelerating climate action in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Key global and local targets include:
      100% renewable electricity
Globally, we aim to source 100% of our electricity from renewable sources by 2025. J&J Ireland has already achieved this milestone.[1]
      Carbon neutral operations
We are committed to achieving carbon neutrality across all our operations by 2030.[1]
      Paris Agreement goals
Johnson & Johnson Ireland has signed the Business in the Community Low Carbon Pledge, committing to meeting carbon reduction targets in line with the Paris Agreement.[1]

      Sustainability: A continuous journey
We are continuously exploring ways to improve our energy, carbon, and water efficiency across all our operations, products, and supply chains. This includes developing more sustainable products that help protect our planet for future generations.

Sustainability is more than just an operational goal for us—it’s a fundamental part of how we manage our personal, business, and societal impacts to ensure better outcomes for patients and society.

By upholding strong governance and standards, we ensure consistency and accountability throughout our entire product lifecycle. We remain committed to driving environmental progress and creating a healthier planet.
