Animal welfare – our guidelines
The care and use of laboratory animals in biomedical procedures is highly regulated. Our companies have clear, well-developed guidelines in place. This also promotes the use of non-animal alternatives whenever possible. Our standards for animal care and use meet or exceed all applicable local national laws and regulations.

Animal research legislation – cultivating a culture of care
The basis of European legislation on animal testing dates back to 1986. In 2010, the Directive was updated, particularly in respect to transparency and the monitoring mechanisms for animal welfare, and subsequently translated into national legislations in various stages.
Ethical committee on animal testing
Janssen established an Ethical Commission on Animal Testing even before the law imposed it. This is complementary to Johnson & Johnson’s global 3Rs initiative aimed at Reducing, Refining and/or Replacing animal use in biomedical research; education or training; or demonstrating the highest scientific integrity partnered with strong business performance.
As part of this commitment, a fourth “R” has been added to refer to the Responsibility we show as a company in treating our laboratory animals with the compassion and respect they deserve.
